Meet Freddie and Bucky, our CAN canine cuties – our two therapy dogs.
We realise that to give every child the same chance at City Academy Norwich, we need to offer as many opportunities as possible, including therapeutic ones.
School dogs have been proven to help develop students’ reading skills, improve behaviour, attendance and academic confidence, as well as increasing student understanding of responsibility and develop empathy and nurturing skills. The benefit of the dogs being in school will be that the children feel a sense of calm when dysregulated, feel empowered and confident when reading, gain an understanding of how their behaviour affects themselves and others, and allows students to develop strategies that maintain positive relationships. Our therapy dogs two therapy dogs in our Academy to help with any social, emotional and mental health difficulties that the children may face.
Their training will take approximately two years, using a combination of both independent training with the owners, and joint training with our specialist linked organisation Canine Assisted Wellbeing Group https://www.canineassistedlearning.com/
